The Horse Spirit Society of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation will launch its inaugural five-day trail ride through the Badlands to the Black Hills on Saturday.

Riders of the “Horseback Ride to the Sacred Ground,” which will honor Native American youth, will gather just south of Big Foot Pass on Exit 121 of Interstate 90. Riders will leave at 9 a.m. Sunday for the first leg of the journey. Organizers raised $15,000 for the event. The ride will follow the White River, Cottonwood Creek, Rockyford, Stronghold, Red Shirt Table and Palmer Gulch by June 17. More than 75 riders from Standing Rock, Cheyenne River, Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations are expected to participate. For information, contact Percy White Plume at (605) 454-2495.
